Our Design Process
By definition, any new product is in some way unique and developers differ in their resources, needs and goals. Monochrome Design has a 6-step development path that covers the spectrum from early user and customer insight to a finished production sample. However our hallmark is flexibility. You may wish us along for the entire journey or depending on your starting point or area of responsibility, certain phases of it. Whatever your requirements, Monochrome has developed workflows, processes and design methodologies that create certainty around timelines, deliverables and costs, resulting in an unusual degree of clarity, confidence and precision. Scroll over the images below for an outline of each step in the process.
Monochrome Design brings commitment, passion and zeal to every phase of your developmental process
This is about comprehension and definition of the project. We listen to you, your customers and key stakeholders. We assess competitive products, analyse market trends, observe and examine, research and test. We sketch a range of potential solutions.
Taking cues from your styling direction and branding we get hands-on, using rough-build modelling and 3D CAD to generate form and character. We explore manufacturing methodology, materials, colour, textures and finishes creating a product that is fit-for purpose and appealing.
We sweat the small stuff – everything from how each part will be manufactured to the way light will reflect from surfaces. Working in 3D CAD, we generate a design that prototype and manufacturing engineers can to bring to life in an aesthetically resolved, robust model ready for preliminary assembly and functional testing.
The design takes form as a functional model that can be seen, touched and used. We critique quality, aesthetics, functionality, ease of assembly and mechanical performance before delivering the prototype to you for your own evaluation and testing.
Inevitably, lessons are learned and opportunities identified. We work with you to implement improvements before issuing data to manufacturing partners for final input and quotation. This culminates in our preparation of detailed yet succinct documentation that enables production of a tool-trial ready, manufacturable product.
We work closely with your manufacturing partner to ensure that design intent is maintained and that custom-designed parts are produced to specification. We provide Design For Manufacture support, review tooling design, inspect pre-production samples, troubleshoot production issues, highlight non-compliance and update documentation as necessary.
